Camp Newman-Swig Cancels Some Sessions, Begins Others Thursday, June 25th

Camp Newman-Swig and the URJ have been incredible in their tireless devotion to the health and safety of our staff and campers. I wrote about their commendable efforts here and here.

Camp just now announced its plans for the remainder of the session and the rest of the summer. There will be disappointment and sadness (we surely feel that way here) but health and safety must come first!

  1. The flu of '09 reminds me of the years I worked at URJ Camp Eisner, 1978-81. The first year, our unit, Ofarim, went on an overnight at a state campsight where the water was tainted. Everyone came down with what we called "Ofaritis", a very unpleasant intenstinal bug. The next summer the state closed down the kitchen after a samonella outbreak. Shabbat dinner was hundreds of Frozen dinners, which, once out of the package, were all indistinguishable one from the other, all being covered in aluminum foil. Couldn't tell the vegie meals from others. The next day for lunch we ordered Kentucky Fried Chicken for 700. I remember sitting on the porch of the directors home when the call came from one of the KFC managers" "Do y'all want that extra crispy or regular?" The next summer was lice… We felt we were living the ten plagues one summer at a time! All survived, and it makes for some great stories, as I am sure this summer will as well, in time.
