Prayer While Waiting for Surgery

A prayer for the long days between scheduling a surgery and walking into the operating room.
Adonai Ori v’Yishi (God, my Light and my Salvation),
You who hear the prayers we struggle to speak,
Who steady our spirits when tomorrow feels frightening,
Help me find strength in the waiting.
I come before You with a heart held tight,
Wound in worry, wrapped in waiting.
A surgery is scheduled: a date circled, a path prepared,
But the days between now and then feel endless,
And uncertainty has certainly found its way into the quiet moments.
Holy One,
You know the worries I whisper,
And those I dare not speak.
When my mind wanders toward what might go wrong,
Help me find my way back to what will go right.
Let me breathe deeply,
And find reassurance in the promise of healing.
Guide the hands of my healers,
Steady their fingers, sharpen their focus,
Grant wisdom to those entrusted with my life.
Bless them with the brilliance of Bezalel,
With skill, sensitivity, and steady hands,
As they work in places so delicate,
Where even the smallest movement matters.
And until then,
Send shalom (peace) to my spirit,
Send chizuk (strength) to my soul,
Send rachamim (compassion) to my caregivers,
And savlanut (patience) to those who love me.
Let this waiting not be wasted time,
But a time for whispered prayers,
For embraces extended, for tears released,
For saying the words of love too often left unsaid.
And when the uncertainty weighs heavily,
Help me find moments of calm.
Hold me close, HaMakom (The One Who Is Present),
When I struggle to hold myself together.
Amen.
